Why is my business not showing on Google Maps? 8 reasons and fixes

Here are eight common reasons a business doesn’t show up on Google Maps, and the fix for each. Start at the top, because the first few are quick to check.

1. Your profile isn’t verified. Unverified profiles often don’t show at all. Fix: sign in to your Google Business Profile and finish verification.
2. Your profile is suspended. Google hides profiles that break its rules. Fix: look for a warning in your dashboard, correct the problem and ask for a review. What to do if you’re suspended.
3. You’re checking from the wrong spot. Results change with where the searcher is standing. Fix: check from where your customers are, not from your own counter.
4. You searched for a service, not your name. Showing up for “plumber near me” is a ranking, not a listing. Fix: work on the next four reasons.
5. Your category or services don’t match the search. Fix: pick the most accurate main category and list every service you sell, in your customers’ words.
6. You have few or old reviews. Google favours businesses that look active and trusted. Fix: ask every customer for a review, and never buy them.
7. Your details differ across the web. Different names, numbers or addresses on other sites confuse Google. Fix: make them match everywhere, including Apple Maps, Bing and Yelp.
8. You have a duplicate listing. Two profiles for one business can hide each other. Fix: find the extra one and ask Google to remove or merge it.

If you serve customers at their place and hide your address, you won’t see a pin on the map. That’s normal. You can still show up in the results for the areas you serve.

A name search only needs Google to find you. A service search is a ranking, and other businesses nearby may match it better or look more established.

The usual causes are a suspension, an edit that is under review, a duplicate listing being merged, or competitors moving ahead of you. Check your profile dashboard for a warning first.

How long does a new profile take to show up?

It can appear for searches of your name soon after it’s verified. Showing up for service searches usually takes months, because reviews and listings build slowly.
